Sainte's is a pretty town on the River Charente, it has multiple shops, stores and restaurants of all kinds. Saintes is mentioned in the Michelin guide as definitely worth a visit, for its impressive Roman architecture, and boat trips down the river all summer long. The Charente Maritime with its special microclimate, makes this region of france the second sunniest after the Riviera. It offers much of interest to all, with the sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast only a twenty minute drive from the villa. You can explore the waterways of the Marais Poitevin, (Green Venice), the Cognac distilleries with guided tours and tasting, La Rochelle a gem of a coastal town with its old towers and lively port. For all the family there's a good-sized breading Zoo at La Palmyre, with lots of baby animals, and its five miles of sandy beaches nearby. You may wish to try a trip to the islands of Ile de Re, or Ile de'Oleron that have a Mediterranean feel about them, with whitewashed cottages full of Hollyhocks. Castles and Chateau's abound that should not be missed like La Roche Courbon, described as Sleeping Beauties Castle, and 17th century Chateau du Douhet in 49 acres of gardens and ornamental lake. For something a little different and unusual, a trip to Futurescope or the Son & Lumiere show at La Puy Du Fou can be worth trip. On the other hand if you have no wish to race and chase around seeing the many sites, why not just relax at the villa and enjoy the sunny south facing terrace with private secluded pool and barbecue. Sit in the sun, or if you prefer, press a button to enjoy your meal under the shelter of the large electric sunshade. The choice is yours and here is endless! |
